Have you ever been been ice skating? Do you know what ice skating is? or just not had the time to explore this fantastic experience? Skating is brilliant fun for all the family and provides good exercise in a relaxing and and exciting environment.
But you may ask.. Why is skating such fun? Well for one you body moves in a different way to how it would normally and in a way that you normally would not move (in a good way of course). Imaging gliding around at high speed (or low speed if its your still learning), with your adrenaline pumping with lots of other people and friends around you.
You may be feeling a little nervous and maybe a little dizzy going round the oval skating rink whilst passing your friends and possible giving them a little nudge as you pass them. Possibly trying to avoid a collission or using them to stay on your feet. Of course there is the risk that you will collide with another skater or fall whilst trying to impress.
We all know the wet cold bum feeling when we think we are olympic skaters then boom.. maybe a wrong turn or a little push from a friend and where down… These are the times when we are pleased we brought our gloves with us
but it all helps to have fun and keep us focussed.
So what can you expect at an ice rink?
Well as we all know ‘Ice melts at 32 degrees fairenheit’, and as we wouldnt want the ice to melt as we are skating on it then it must be kept rather cold to prevent melting taking place and to save us having to swim to the side when we want to leaveif it got too warm. This does mean that a wooly hat and pair of gloves would be needed to to stop us going rather blue with a little numb with the cold.
You normally find music playing at the rink as well, through set of powerful speakers but this really does help build up the excitement of the skate and the social interaction of all the skaters. When all of these elements come together it really does help you relax and takes your mind off other distractions (this may be work or school). All in all this makes for a fun environment in which you can enjoy yourself.
Most of what we have describes so far applies to what we call ‘recreational skating’, which is the kind of skating lots of people do (including myself).
The most popular form of ice skating that you will find in most ice rinks is ‘recreational skating’ in which you pay a small fee to hire your ice skates before venturing out on the ice. You will find that most of the public ice rinks allow public ice skating.
Recreational skating is not the only form of skating that is gaining huge popularity through the major countries on different continents. We also have figure skating, dance skating, speed skating and other sports such as ice hockey.
With the invention of the tv ice skating shows the popularity of the sport has exploded.
What is figure skating?
I confess that I have long been a great devotee} of figure skating. In this sport skaters execute routines, frequently taking leaps, twists, turns, triple, and now even quadruple lutzes. This is one sport that is very demanding and the fitness level of the skater must extreme. The skater must also understand the laws of physics in order to carry out the moves to perfection and in a timely manner.
When figure skaters carry out there routines you can plainly see the different degrees of precision when you see the angular momentum, spin and takeoff velocity all combined in a perfect movement. The skater needs a lot of power to launch into a jump and to be able to sustain a spin or just to simply control a precise landing. If you have watched any figure skating before you will understand how gracefully controlled and balanced the skaters really are. The concentration level of the skaters is also a major factor in the sucess of the routines.
What is speed skating?
Speed skating is another form of skating that really does deserve a mention here as well. As you can probably work out from the name ‘speed skating’ is all about.. you’ve guessed it ‘SPEED’.
There are two type of speed skating that takes place in that we have what is called ‘long track’ and ‘short track’ speed skating. The skaters do laps of sprints around the rink (normally a circular track) and the skater that finishes in the fastest time is the outright winner.
You will find that the motion that the speed skater uses is very unique and not what you would see in other types of skating. The speed skaters optimum position is to bend forwards from the hips and swing there arms at tremendous speed to and fro to enable them to propel themselves as fast as humanly possible.
What is ice hockey?
Ice hockey is a sport that has been around for a long long time now (since the 1920′s) and involves two teams of five skaters that have to score a goal againstt he opposing team by putting a puck into the opposition teams goal.
The goal is garded by one of the opponents players (goalie) and you must hit the puck (a hard disk) with a hockey stick into the said goal. The game is all about strategy (both defensive and offensive) and involved a trendous amount of team work to enable the sucess of your own team.
You will find that most ice rinks are part fo an ice hockey league and allow public access to watch the games, which are extremely enjoyable.
I hope that this little introduction into ice skating has been of interest to you and that you may now want to get involved and try out skating for yourself. I take my young kids skating and they absolutly love it and is something I would recommend to both families, singles and friends who are looking for some good fun and excitement.
